Winter Solstice - blocks completed!

I've been working away at my Winter Solstice quilt and I now have all the blocks done and the flimsy almost completed. I love how it has turned out.  All the different sized blocks make a much more interesting quilt. Its all done in Christmas fabrics.

This lovely big block is called Weather Vane. I fussy cut the Santas and used the red and white in the same pattern to keep the focus on the Santa fabric.

These blocks are Spring Fever and On The Go. I used the last of the Snowman fabric.

I love this block! Its another very large one called Lucky Girl. The corners remind me of envelopes.

The next block is Summer Rose and I was able to feature the green fabric.

And last but not least is the Tile Time block. It reminds me of the Australian Desert Pea flower and it has me thinking of how to use it again in a future quilt.

I also remade the Churn Dash block as I was not happy with the original fabrics I used.

In joining up the quilt I made a few changes to original design /layout. It looks wonderful laid out on the bed. I've made three panels which I plan to quilt separately and then join up. So for now its in my 'to do' pile. The quilt hangs down the side of the bed so you can't see all of it. When it's quilted I'll post a better picture.

Winter Solstice - making progress!!

The last few days I've been plodding along with my Christmas Winter Solstice blocks. I love the bigger blocks and they are looking lovely in the Christmas fabric.

Among The Stars - the big central block, confirmed my newfound love of HSTs!

a close up on the star centre..

Board Games block:

Jacobs Ladder - I changed this as I preferred this layout, so it doesn't look like a ladder, but I'm happy with it.

Precious Fabric - I swapped my light for dark in this block as I wanted a big area of the Santa print showing.

I still have 14 blocks to go. I've decided I'm going to QAYG with this one as I haven't done that before and the big blocks lend themselves to using this method.

Winter Solstice Blocks

Well I've had a busy day sewing more Winter Solstice blocks and I'm really pleased with how its looking.

This block is Gramma Annas Basket and its different to the design. I wanted to feature the fabric in the centre of the block instead of applique the basket and then I changed the direction of the other blocks to form a frame.

This block is Tidy Rows.

And I really like this block - The Crosswalk.

I've cut out the pieces for the next few blocks ready to go tomorrow. The quilt is going to be bigger than I thought!

Winter Solstice - Cobblestones

Well I've been away from the sewing machine for far too long! It feels good to get my sewing mojo back and I certainly have a lot of projects to catch up on. I'm seeing everyones beautiful Pat Sloans' Winter Solstice quilts getting finished so I thought I'd start with some solstice blocks

Block 4 is called Cobblestones, a nice simple block pattern that sewed up quickly.

I'm doing a Christmas themed quilt so I'm using red, green, a santa fabric and a christmas floral fabric. On to block #5 now..

En Provence MQ - Final Clue

The reveal of En Provence's layout did not disappoint - I love the final look of the quilt!  But before piecing it together there was batch of quarter square triangles to be made.

I made an error in measurement when cutting the triangles so I have a heap that are smaller left over.  Next time I will trim blocks as I go, I had a lot of trimming up to do!

One thing I've learned from the mystery quilt is how versatile triangles are, and I feel much more confident sewing them now. I spent some time playing around with different patterns.

Then I got down to laying out my blocks:

I've not had much time to sew but I have several blocks partially pieced.

Lily decided they made a great place to sleep  - she did not want to get off them when I tried to move her and put up a bit of an argument.

I've learned so much working on En Provence and I'm pleased I've been able to keep up with sewing each clue. Planning on big weeks sewing this week to get the top pieced.

2017 FAL - Q1 list

I've been flat out finishing up at work this last week, no time for sewing or blogging. But now that I'm on leave I can get back to sewing so heres my list for the first quarter Finish-A-Long for 2017.

Heres my projects:

1. Tooth Monsters.  I made these little tooth monster pillows and made a mistake with attaching the legs. So I had to take the legs off and redo them all. I've done one, then I couldn't decide wether to just make them legless or add legs and so they have just sat patiently waiting to be finished for about a year.

2. Dog Coats.  Last winter Angels for the Forgotten requested some dog coats for some of their elderly clients who have dogs. I cut these out, fleece lined with flannelette and then ordered the clips. By the time the clips had arrived I'd moved on to other projects and just never got back to them. I need to get them finished and sent off for this winter.

3. Bunny Softies.  One dozen bunnies have been sewn up and just need to be stuffed and their faces finished.

4.  Girls Dresses & Skirts.  The T-shirts have been cut shorter, the skirts have been cut, hemmed and seams sewn and just need to sewn on to the T'shirts. Three skirts have been sewn up, hemmed and all they need is the elastic in the waistband.

The rest of my list is carried over from the last FAL.

5. Tote Bags.  I listed these in the last FAL and did complete some, but didn't include them as a finish as I didn't finish all 50. Last quarter I was able to make good progress. The ones on the bottom left just need the handles added and now that the webbing has arrived (that blue circle) the handles can be done. The bottom middle pile has had coloured borders added to the top and they just need one seam joined plus handles. The pile on the right have all had pockets added and need to be joined and have handles. I started with a goal to do 50 but have about 70 in this pile. I love making these - they are used for Dress A Girl Australia  Education without Borders project. The more bags, the more school supplies can fill them.

6. Hygiene Purses - just need to snaps put on.

7. Warren the Charity Bear.  I cut these out and started adding the felt pieces but just never got back to them. Need to finish sewing & stuffing them.

8. Eye Spy Playmat.   Just need to do the binding!

So thats my list of 2017 Q1 FAL projects, much more manageable than my previous one.

Winter Solstice - Tide Pools Block

This morning the third winter solstice block was released. I really enjoy doing these, they are nice quick patterns to put together.  I spent a while choosing which fabric to feature in this block and eventually decided on the little snowmen.

Linking up with Pats Linky page.

I've been busy the last few days either sewing or sorting out my sewing room and going through old UFO's. I've found a couple I'd forgotten about and somehow 'lost' my Splendid Sampler fabrics - which generally means I've put it in a safe place!   I've signed up for so many projects this year - yes I'm probably overcommitted but gee its nice to thinking about sewing all day instead of work for a change! ... time to get back to the sewing machine..
